I'm in a slightly different position. I'm a private teacher who watch my students grow up over the years, but again, I see the family struggles. I try and encourage the kids to make decisions that will give them freedom to make choices later in life. I feed them whenever I happen to have extra food. I see the stress in their lives - the pressure from home to excel, but the lack of support. (it's hard for kids to feel good about themselves when the parents feel it's their job to make sure their kids stay humble, by putting them down constantly) I am always trying to encourage my students that the very least they can do for themselves should be the best, and to value themselves as human beings.

I am still friends with many of my students who have grown up and have been moving on to successful careers.

I think I would agonize in the public school system about every child that I can't help.

Making a decision that you had to make must not have been pleasnt too do. I understand that it may have been a really hard decision also to make- as a school I supose there are limits to how much you can do and what your actions may result in.
More respect should be shown for many like you who have had to make these possibly 'life canging' decisions- but as said there are limits to what you can do on a proffesional and personal basis.
I don't suppose there is an answer really, but I hope you made the right decision that put your mind to rest.

Kind Regards
